Why Use Solar Hot Water?

Solar hot water systems are the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly hot water systems around, using renewable energy from the sun to quickly heat water for your home.

Aside from a heat pump hot water heating system, it’s the perfect option for anyone interested in lowering their carbon emissions, gas, and electricity bills.

Whether you currently have a solar hot water unit that needs to be serviced or repaired or are looking at installing a brand-new solar system, Metropolitan can help you out.

Our local plumbers have more than 25 years of experience in plumbing and solar hot water and can take care of all your needs.

It could be emergency work, or a routine yearly service. Whatever the job, you will benefit from our upfront fixed prices. There’ll be no surprises surrounding your hot water.

Now’s the time to keep your solar hot water in check. Metropolitan Plumbing is ready and raring to go, so just give us a call and we’ll have a solar expert at your home within the hour*.

How Does Solar Work?

Solar hot water systems work by collecting rays from the sun using a set of solar panels, which then convert the rays into heat energy. As water pumps around the system, either from a storage tank mounted on the roof in an integrated system or a tank set on the ground in a split system, this heat energy is transferred into the water.

The water is heated by constantly circulating through the heat exchanger and tank, keeping it at a regular temperature, but since the energy comes from the sun, heating it costs you very little.

In winter, cooler water and less sunlight will impact the efficiency of your solar unit. However, there are simple solutions, such as an electric or gas booster for your system.

A booster element acts as a backup to your hot water system when there’s just not enough of the sun’s energy to absorb. The boosters will kick in when you need hot water, promptly heating the water. The charges with an electric or gas booster also will remain fairly low, meaning you’re not putting extra expenses into winter heating energy costs.

FAQ – We Answer Your Solar Hot Water System Questions

Solar hot water systems are more complicated than you'd think. Here's what you need to know.

Hot water storage tanks typically range from 125-400L so you can find the optimum sized tank for your home. An average Australian four-person household will typically require two collector panels and a 300-360L storage tank to ensure adequate hot water. That equates to approximately 75L per person. When deciding what size solar hot water system your family needs, there are a few things to consider:
  • How many people live in your home
  • Approximately how much water does your home use
  • What time do you use your hot water
  • Do you all use hot water at the same time of day
  • Is there a high demand for overlapping hot water use
The size of your tank is important so you don’t waste money heating water you don’t need, and so you don’t run out of hot water halfway through your shower. If your home adopts water-saving measures, your hot water storage tank could potentially be halved in size. Metropolitan plumbers can give you advice on the best-sized solar hot water system for your home and family.
Solar hot water heaters have a lot of variations to consider. Finding the right combination of these is a good way to find the best solar hot water system for your home. Thermosiphon systems have the collector panels and water storage tank fixed to the roof. Pumped, or split systems have the collector panels on the roof which heat the water and pump it down to a storage tank on the ground level. Depending on whether or not you can have collector panels placed in an ideal location, you may need a larger collector area. These solar collectors can be either flat panels or the more efficient, but pricier evacuated tubes. For days when the sun isn’t out, you will need to consider a larger storage tank or look to gas heaters or electric boosters.
A well-maintained solar hot water system can last for more than 10 years, and some even will even continue to perform after more than 20 years. To get the most out of your solar hot water system, it is important you have it regularly serviced. Not only will this extend the life of your solar water heater, but it will also ensure it runs efficiently, saving you money in the long run. After 10 years or so, your solar hot water system may need some parts replaced. Replacing these parts is an excellent long-term solution to prolong the life of your water heater as opposed to trying to repair them, only for them to fail again in the near future.
Most solar panels have one or two anti-frost valves installed on the panels. This is designed to protect the solar panel from frost or excessively cold air temperatures. However, if this valve fails or has not yet been installed this will then, unfortunately, result in the replacement of the panels. In frost regions, most manufacturers have panels that are different from the standard and often have a liquid called glycol which moves between the tank and the panels to prevent frost damage. This differs from conventional solar panels which are just a standard panel that only uses water to pass through the tank and panels.
