Why Electric Hot Water?

Over recent years, many Australian homeowners have turned away from electric hot water systems in favour of solar and heat pump water heaters. This has largely been due to increasing electricity costs and the more favourable environmental impact of renewable, energy-efficient power sources.

But some manufacturers are putting valuable time and resources into developing electric water heaters that lower energy consumption without compromising on performance. Choose the right system, and you can lessen any concerns about excessive running costs.

Installing and Servicing Australia’s Favourite Makes and Models

For 30 years, Metropolitan Plumbing has provided Aussie homeowners with new installations, regular servicing and emergency repairs for a vast range of electric water heaters. We work with an equally vast range of makes and models, including favourite brands like:

For expert installation of an electric hot water system, discuss your options with a Metropolitan Plumbing hot water systems specialist. We’ll then source and install your preferred appliance.

Electric Hot Water Repair and Service

Your hot water heater is one thing you never want to start malfunctioning, so it’s incredibly frustrating and annoying when it does.

Here at Metropolitan Plumbing, our hot water systems experts understand this. This is why they maintain regular and thorough training to prepare them for any repairs that your hot water system needs.

Not only that, but our plumbers also have a huge selection of spare parts stocked in their vans at all times, making repair jobs quick and time-efficient.

The Importance of Avoiding DIY Electric Water Heater Repairs

When it comes to maintenance and repairs for electric hot water systems, always leave it to a licensed plumber (or electrician if the need is electrical-related). DIY or unlicensed plumbing and electrical work is not legal in Australia. With either one, you also run the risk of voiding your hot water system warranty and breaching your home and contents insurance policy.

Whether you have a storage tank system or a continuous flow unit, don’t take that risk. Contact Metropolitan Plumbing as soon as the problem arises, and we’ll have one of our hot water professionals at your door within an hour*.

Electric Storage and Continuous Flow – What's the Difference?

Looking at a new hot water system and can’t decide between installing an electric-powered continuous flow system or a storage tank model? We’ll explain the differences between the two most common types of electric water heaters.

Electric storage hot water systems store and continuously heat water in an insulated tank. The tanks come in a vast range of storage capacities and guarantee a reliable hot water flow, even for multiple outlets. However, there’s a risk of using up all the stored hot water, which means you’ll need to wait for it to reheat. Additionally, the constant heating can cause your electricity bills to increase.

On the other hand, instantaneous (AKA continuous flow) hot water units heat water only on demand, activating only when someone turns on the hot tap. Compared to tanks for stored water, they provide a truly space-saving solution. They’re also a consistent hot water source that comes without the heat loss commonly associated with storage tanks.

However, an instantaneous system might struggle to deliver consistent temperatures when multiple outlets are used simultaneously, sometimes resulting in unexpected cold water.

Looking to Switch from Electric Models?

Looking to replace your existing electric water heater with a different system altogether? We’ve got you covered on that front, too. Our plumbers can help you explore other options on the market, such as solar water heaters and heat pump water heaters that offer low running costs and high energy efficiency.

These options will help you save energy and can accommodate a household of any size. It’s important to note that while the initial purchase and installation price may be higher, in the long run, they will help you save significantly on your energy bills.

FAQs – Electric Hot Water System Questions, Answered

Want to know more about electric hot water systems? We're here to help.

The short answer is yes, while the long answer is a qualified yes. In a household of 3-4 people, you can attribute about $1000 from your yearly electricity bill to hot water costs. Compared to electric storage on peak tariffs, gas continuous-flow is typically cheaper, while solar and heat pump systems are even cheaper still. You can save money by using hot water during off-peak tariff times, however. Arguably, the most cost-effective option is a heat pump system. The heat pump uses the warmth in the surrounding air to heat water, much like a reverse refrigerator. It works best in warmer climates and is a slightly noisier water heater to run.
Yes. Many households run electric tanks on daytime PV via a timer or PV diverter, or choose a heat pump to maximise solar use. Note this is different from solar hot water, which uses roof collectors with a storage tank, often with an electric or gas booster for cloudy periods.
There could be several reasons why your water and hot water system smells. A burning smell can be caused by a buildup of dust, surrounding insulation/rubber or an electrical fault. A sulphur-like odour in the hot water itself would be the result of bacteria in the hot water outlets and may well be paired with discolouration. If there are any signs that something is wrong with your hot water system, call our customer service team today to organise an inspection.
