A leaking toilet cistern, or one that is neither filling nor flushing, can be a major problem in a busy home. After all, what use is a modern toilet if it doesn’t flush? Thankfully, the cistern plumbing professionals at Metropolitan Plumbing are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get your bathroom plumbing back in perfect working order. From new installations and repairs to upgrading from single to dual flush cisterns, we do it all.

How Does a Toilet Cistern Work?

So, what is the toilet cistern? It is the storage tank that holds water for flushing solid and liquid waste.

When you press the flush button, it releases stored water into the toilet bowl, removing liquid and solid waste. The process relies on several key components working together to control water flow, air pressure, and water level. A proper-functioning cistern ensures efficient flushing while keeping water wastage to a minimum.

The Parts of the Toilet Cistern

Here are the main parts of a toilet cistern and what they do:

  • Flush valve – Releases water from the cistern into the toilet bowl when you press the flush button.
  • Fill valve – Controls the water supply line and refills the cistern after flushing.
  • Float mechanism – Regulates the water level inside the cistern to prevent overflow.
  • Water tank – Stores water ready for flushing, typically holding 3 to 6 litres in dual flush systems.
  • Push button – Activates the flush valve to release water. In modern cisterns with dual-flush capabilities, the button accommodates different flush volumes.
  • Air pressure control – Helps regulate water release for a smooth, consistent flush.
  • Seals and washers – Prevent leaks by ensuring a tight seal between cistern parts.

If any of these cistern components fail, you may experience weak flushing, leaks, or constant water running. Regular maintenance and timely repairs from Metropolitan Plumbing can keep your toilet cistern in top condition and help you comply with strict Australian standards for water efficiency. Different Types of Toilet Cisterns

Toilet cisterns come in various designs to suit different bathroom layouts, water-saving needs, and style preferences. The most common types in Australia include:

  • Close-coupled cisterns – The cistern sits directly on the toilet bowl, offering a sleek, space-saving design with minimal water wastage.
  • Concealed cisterns – Installed inside a wall cavity or behind cabinetry for a minimalist appearance and easy cleaning.
  • Dual flush cisterns – Feature water-saving options, allowing users to choose between a full flush for solid waste or a half flush for liquid waste.
  • Back entry & bottom inlet cisterns – Connected to the water supply line either from the back of the cistern or underneath.

Dual flush systems have been the standard for new toilet cistern installations in Australia since the early 1990s. They’re favoured over toilets with a single flush button as they can release as little as 3.5L per flush (for liquid waste) compared to 12L per flush for the outdated model.

Each cistern plumbing type has unique benefits, and Metropolitan Plumbing can help with installation, repairs, and maintenance to ensure proper water flow and flushing performance.

FAQ – Answers to All Your Commonly Asked Cistern Questions

If you've got a question about toilet cisterns and cistern plumbing, we've got the answer.

Cisterns have a lot of moving parts that can go wrong and prevent a cistern from filling up. A broken fill valve will impair the flow of water back into the cistern when you press the flush button. A prolonged hissing sound indicates that the cistern isn’t filling efficiently – or perhaps not at all. It could also be the float at the top of the cistern that sits too low and tells your cistern to stop filling too soon.
Is water continually trickling into the bowl? It’s the opposite of the problem of the cistern not filling up and means that the cistern isn’t turning itself off when full and the constant overflow goes into the bowl. Sometimes the cistern itself springs a leak, often through a damaged valve or aged seal.
Yes and no. You can replace just the cistern, although ideally, we recommend a full toilet suite replacement. Cisterns are often paired to an exact toilet model, holding the right amount of water to flush at the correct angle for the bowl. If the cistern and toilet are a mismatch, you’ll encounter problems with poor flushing that leaves solids in the toilet bowl.
