Benefits of a Hot Water Service

No matter the type of water heater you have, we can see to all of its needs. But you may be wondering why you actually need a service – or how often.

You should have a hot water heater serviced regularly to prolong its life. You’ll certainly encounter some plumbing problems during its life, and there are some clear signs you need to call in a qualified plumber.

Some of the most common problems you might encounter with your water heater include:

  • Discoloured or rusty water
  • Running out of hot water quickly
  • Strange noises from the tank (banging, whistling)
  • Leaking or pooling water around the tank
  • No hot water at all
  • The pilot light regularly goes out (gas hot water systems)

Working with everything from continuous flow tankless water heaters, to electric storage tanks, solar hot water systems and even heat pumps, Metropolitan Plumbing has knowledge of all hot water heaters. Our expert technicians will always give you a long-term solution and maximum benefit.

How Long Do Hot Water Heaters Last?

Hot water systems are expected to last anywhere between 10-15 years. Your location, usage and the type of hot water heater will always determine its life expectancy.

Some parts within the system will last longer than others, which is why a regular yearly service is often best to pick up any minor imperfections or faults. When a plumber checks out your hot water they can accurately identify any parts which need to be repaired or replaced.

Or they may even recommend a full replacement of the hot water unit if age and other factors mean it’s beyond repair. A regular service will help you save money on large costs down the track, though, and can keep your water steaming hot!

While on-site, your plumber will inspect parts such as the following:

  • Tempering valve
  • Pressure relief valve
  • Sacrificial anode
  • Thermostat
  • Thermocouple

A gas storage hot water system will have some unique features when compared to a wall-mounted gas instantaneous system, whiles solar and electric will also need their own specialised service.

Metropolitan Plumbing can do it all, so call us today for a reliable and thorough inspection.

FAQ – What You Need to Know About Hot Water Systems

Whatever your hot water system question is, we've answered it here.

Each manufacturer will recommend a different amount of time between hot water services. Each component and mechanism will need to be checked at different time intervals. Here is a rough guide as to when they should be tested:
  • Pressure relief valve – every 6 months
  • Expansion control valve – every 6 months
  • Pressure limiting valve – every 3-5 years
  • Tempering valve – every 3-5 years
  • Isolation non-return valve – every 3-5 years
  • Sacrificial anode – every 3-5 years
  • Element – every 3-5 years
  • Thermostat – every 3-5 years
  • Thermocouple – every 3-5 years
The age of your system may determine whether it’s better to repair or replace it. On average, hot water heaters last 10-15 years. If you’re in the last few years of that lifespan then replacement is typically going to be more cost-efficient in the long run. Modern units have better energy efficiency and will save you money on running costs. You may also be able to upgrade from a storage tank to a more efficient instant hot water unit or swap from electricity to gas or solar. If the hot water heater is a newer model then your plumber can probably repair it and, unless it’s a serious problem, won’t need to consider replacement.
Few things are worse than jumping into the shower on a cold morning to find your hot water pressure just isn’t cutting it. It’s a common problem in Australian homes, but the good news is that it’s normally a relatively straightforward fix. Common causes include:
  • Sediment in the system
  • Water main problems
  • Partially closed valve
  • Water heater malfunction
Low water pressure could also be caused by leaking or rusty pipes, or in the shower perhaps a lacklustre showerhead. If that’s the case and your hot water system isn’t to blame, our plumbers will still see out the job and fix your pressure.
