The Dangers of Gas Leaks
Gas is an efficient and economical fuel source to use for your home heating needs.
From the gas stove or heater to your gas-powered hot water system, Aussie households use it widely for hot water, cooking, heating up the house, or even heating your swimming pool.
Due to the highly flammable nature of gas, though, a major gas leak could put your house and family in danger. Even when a minor gas leak occurs, it’s important to fix it ASAP before it gets worse. Additionally, health complications from gas exposure are also very serious.
How Can You Tell You Have a Potential Gas Leak?
While natural gas and LPG are naturally odourless, your gas distributor adds a chemical compound called mercaptan to the natural gas supply. When you smell gas inside or outside your home, that distinct rotten egg smell, that’s the mercaptan alerting you to a potential gas leak.
But being able to smell rotten eggs isn’t the only indicator of a gas leak. Others include:
- Whistling noises or hissing sounds from your gas appliances (including the gas heater)
- Inconsistent hot water from your gas hot water system
- Your gas pilot light changes colour, or it keeps extinguishing
- Patches of dry grass, dying plants or bubbling water on your property for no apparent reason
- Higher-than-average gas bills for no reason
