Why You Need a Plumber to Install Your Dishwasher
Please note: Metropolitan Plumbing does not undertake dishwasher repairs. This is for two reasons:
- In many cases it can be cheaper to simply replace the dishwasher rather than repair it.
- There is the potential of voiding the warranty if you have anyone other than the manufacturer carry out the repair.
When you’ve bought a new dishwasher, you’re going to want to plug it in and get it working as soon as possible. After all, it’s a chance to escape the chore of hand-washing dishes. But do you actually need a licensed plumber for dishwasher installation?
The short answer to that question is yes. A dishwasher installation requires much more work than simply plugging the unit into the nearest powerpoint. That goes for a new installation or replacing an old model with a new one.
It can be a tricky operation, depending on the design of your kitchen. Here are some important reasons you will need a fully qualified plumber for dishwasher installation.
How Old is Your Kitchen?
Most modern kitchens are set up to allow space for a dishwasher, but older kitchens are not. If you’re having to find the correct space to install a dishwasher, you’ll need a professional plumber.
In some dishwasher installation cases, you may need to replace your current sink. Even if this isn’t necessary, you may require a plumber to relocate your drain and supply lines to suit your new appliance. An experienced plumber can also install a metal drain line and a sink guard, if necessary.
Older homes usually have a less-than-adequate number of powerpoints, so you may need an electrician to install more for your new-look kitchen. An experienced plumber might also be able to work out a way to install your dishwasher without needing an extra powerpoint.
You Can Void the Dishwasher Warranty
All dishwashers require a licensed plumber for installation. You might also need a qualified electrician should the installation require an extra powerpoint.
Your dishwasher’s warranty is likely to state that the warranty will be voided if the appliance is not installed by a fully qualified plumber.
Do you know how to install a pressure-limiting valve? This ensures that the correct pressure of water goes into the dishwasher. If the water pressure is too high for the appliance, it can cause a blowout or have an impact on the dishwasher’s performance and longevity.
Fitting a pressure-limiting valve correctly is usually a mandatory requirement in the warranty. While some dishwashers will have these valves fitted within the water hose, a professional plumber will know whether or not a pressure-limiting valve will need to be fitted.
Another factor to be considered is that floor damage caused by a leaking dishwasher may not be covered by insurance if the appliance is not installed by a qualified plumber.
Do You Need Your Old Dishwasher Removed?
If you are replacing an old dishwasher with a new model and you want the obsolete appliance removed, be sure to discuss that with the plumber when you make a booking.
That way the technician will be aware of the job at hand and, in many cases, will be able to take your old dishwasher away. Some technicians may not be able to do this, so make sure you emphasise that you need to have the old model removed before finalising a booking.
Many older models are replaced because, after a certain amount of time, it becomes more economically viable to install a new model than keep an old appliance going. If well maintained, dishwashers generally last about 10 years.
Why DIY Installation Can Be Dangerous
Most people simply don’t have much experience with installing a large appliance like a dishwasher. Here are several reasons why a dishwasher installation is potentially dangerous:
- You’ll need help moving a heavy dishwasher. Don’t try shifting it by yourself.
- You’ll also need help removing the old dishwasher (if you have one) and getting it to a recycling centre.
- Dishwashers need to be fitted and fastened correctly to your water connection. If it’s not done to a professional standard, it can cause overflow and flooding.
- Combining electricity and water is always potentially dangerous for the inexperienced handyperson.
- You can do yourself harm if you don’t have the right tools for the job, which a qualified plumber will always have.
The Wash-Up
Cutting corners by installing your own dishwasher is simply not worth it. A professionally installed dishwasher working at optimum level will give you plenty of service over the next decade, along with saving you money on water bills if you avoid hand-washing dishes.
However, you’ll only get the best out of this handy appliance if it’s installed properly in the first place. It’s advisable to factor in that extra cost when it comes to dishwasher installation.
